Happy 1 year anniversary to my hair!
No, I did not big chop or shave my head bald. I simply cut out all heat tools from my hair, and my hair has been thanking me. Completely cutting heat tools was not an easy step for me to take. If you’re thinking about ditching heat do not worry if it takes time and possibly relapsing.
throwback me with straight hair
I minimized heating my hair starting in my 9th-grade year of high school. I still wanted the silky straight look but every now and then I let my lion mane out. All throughout high school, I allowed my hair to be straightened but no more heat until the next wash. This will help strengthen hair, but in no way will this bring curls back to life.
By the summer, I knew it was time to take the next step. NO HEAT AT ALL. This worked all the way up until the fourth of July weekend when I wanted that long flowing look again. After that weekend, a flat-iron has not touched my head and I am beyond proud of myself. Yet, I am more proud of my hair.
My curl pattern is reforming itself slowly and beautifully. I have been fully transitioning since that weekend and finally taking the steps of chopping off all my straight ends. I haven’t done it yet, but it’s coming.
You want to transition too?
I will not lie to you, transitioning life is WORK.
1. Effort
The whole process can be tiring and annoying just because your hair will be changing. Your hair will begin to reject products it normally loves. You will be constantly figuring out what works for you. So the first step is proving to yourself that you will put in the effort towards the health of your hair, this is extremely important.
2. Ditch the chemicals & heat
This has to be the most difficult step, but the most necessary as well. If you decide you want to transition, slowly remove chemicals and heat from your routine. This will bring your natural pattern back to life over time. This step doesn’t mean no hair dye and straight hair forever, but just until your hair is back the way you want and healthy.
3. Finding the right products
You do not need to go buy every single natural product in Target to find the right products! Start with a trusty deep conditioner, leave in, and moisturizing cream. All other products can be added slowly once you know what works for you.
4. MOISTURIZE
This step is vital to keep your curls & kinks alive! You have to DEEP CONDITION a lot and make sure to add oils into your routines. I personally use coconut oil, olive oil, black castor oil, vitamin E oil, and grape seed oil to keep my scalp and locks moisturized.
5. Protective styling
Finally, learn a few quick and easy styles, get braids, sew in. Just get something to keep your hair protected and all the moisture you add locked in. My go to styles are the flat twist and flexi rod sets and when in doubt just throw it up in a bun.
At the end of the day, if your hair is natural, straight, or relaxed just take care of it.
But I can honestly say transitioning is the best thing I have done for myself this year. I’m excited to see what my hair looks like in the end.

Update:
So I took the steps into making my hair/curls healthier and stronger. I got a haircut!!!!

Yes, my hair is straight so that kinda defeats this post because I had just reached my 1 year with no heat. BUT, I did say that you don’t have to give up heat completely to have healthy hair; it’s all about how much you use it. I am so excited that I took this step in my hair journey and cannot wait to see what my hair can do in the future. No like seriously I’m ready to wash it already so I can see the curls!
BONUS UPDATE:

I washed my hair, and my curls are COMING TO LIFE!
