Bundle up folks, we’re in for an icy winter (or are we…because climate change is real)
As I prepare myself for the terrible cold with sweaters and tights, I realize that there is a lot more I need to do than prepare with clothing. When the winter months arrive it is important to manage your skin, hair, mental, and bodily health. I’m not the best with sticking to routines, but I love to try and make healthy habits so sharing a winter routine might just make me stick to it. And it might help anyone out there who needs to get on top of their self-care!
For Skin:
My skin gets extremely dry in the winter, so the first thing I do it invest in a good lotion! I have been using the CeraVe soothing eczema creamy oil moisturizer for dry and itchy skin. This lotion could be considered pricy as it is upward $16 for eight ounces, however, it is definitely worth the price. The creamy oil blend makes it glide across the skin and leaves it feeling nourished.
My face also gets drier during this time, I have been using water based moisturizers to combat the winter chill. I have been using Boscia’s cactus water moisturizer and Simple’s water boost sleep moisturizer. This is the perfect day and night combination to ensure I’m getting rid of my dry skin around the clock. They are both water based and leaves a nice dewy feeling on my skin.
For Hair:
Winter hair care is crucial as dry hair can cause a lot of damage. Taking care of your hair in the winter is mostly about moisturizing but it is also about the types of winter gear you wear. For moisturizing stick with the products you know work for your hair. The last thing you want to do is try a new leave-in that does your hair no justice. I use cantu’s leave-in, aussie moist, and a blend of oils to rescue my hair from the winter. As far as winter gear I only wear items that will be gentle when rubbing against my hair. There are many satin caps (or tutorials to make your own) on the market to keep your hair and body protected in the cold.
For Mental & Emotional Health:
Seasonal depression is so real, and without the joy of warmth and sunshine, it is important to take care of your mental health. If you have access to a sun lamp, hang out under one as they stimulate actual sunlight. If you don’t that’s okay, do activities that you typically only do in the summer but indoor. Find things that you enjoy doing that can bring you a little more happiness. And most importantly talk to someone about what you’re going through because you are not alone. If accessible reach out to a counselor or therapist.
For Your Body:
Just because it’s cold that doesn’t mean your body does not need water! Make sure you are drinking enough glasses of water each day and eating healthy foods. In the winter, junk food is easy to eat in bulk as we curl up in front of our laptops to watch videos and eat snacks. Keep track of how much junk food you consume and work towards replacing with healthier options. As it’s also flu season and the common cold is spread like wildfire, make sure you’re taking all precautions to keep yourself safe from germs. One of the main things I have been doing is making sure I take my vitamins.
Happy Winter, bundle up or don’t, but take care of yourself!
