Out With The Old (closet clean up)

I finally cleaned out my closet!

Sometimes letting things go is a difficult task. Whenever I open my drawers, I find myself pushing through a million items I never wear. The worst part about those items is that I know I probably will never touch them again. Over the years, I have developed a bad habit for getting too attached to clothes. I still have shirts from middle school, that I can still fit, but they are not my style anymore. I often find myself wondering, why do I keep these items?

With thinking about sustainability in fashion and realizing how much we waste clothing, I constantly hold on to avoid throwing out. That has not done me any good, so I finally gave myself a guide to start the cleaning process.

This guide is meant to be thought about for each item I pull out of my closet/drawer. I am an over thinker and I usually try to justify keeping certain items. But the point of this guide is to push myself to actually let things go.

Post clothes clean up:

I was shocked at how many clothing items I actually let go. I even pushed myself to let go of items I only wear every blue moon because they were taking up unnecessary space. Through sorting, I came up with three piles: Depop, give-away, and throw away. The Depop pile is clothing that is in nice condition and is worth selling. The give-away pile is clothing that is also in nice condition but is better off being given to someone who needs it. Lastly, the throw away pile, despite its name, does not actually mean throw in the trash. I am looking into ways to recycle clothing and or donate to anyone who feels they could do something with the clothing/fabric. I’m really pushing myself not to contribute to clothing waste as much as I use to. I’ll share what happens with these clothes when I get a chance to give them away!

I hope this inspires you to clean your closet out and let some of that clutter go.
