Revamp your closet by changing up your old clothes
This year I broke out my sewing machine and put her to work! I’ve upcycled so many clothes by taking many trips to the thrift store and coming up with ideas to create new pieces. Upcycling or reworking clothing has been an exciting journey for me because I find my outfits being unique to my style. After all, I made them. I think everyone should try upcycling some pieces of clothing. It’s a fun and rewarding process.
Since the quarantine, many people have decided to learn to sew, which I think is amazing! Sewing is a great skill to have regardless if you learn to by hand or by using a machine. If sewing was not your quarantine hobby of choice, you can still upcycle by cutting, tying, and gluing!
Benefits of upcycling:
- A more sustainable way to have creative pieces
If you’re looking for more sustainable ways to grow your closet (although nothing is 100% sustainable), upcycling can help you with that! Shopping secondhand allows you to give clothing another life instead of letting it end up in the dump. Once the item is in your hands, you have free creative reign to style it or upcycle it into something else. I started upcycling when I decided that I no longer wanted to fast fashion shops to be my number one source for clothing.
2. One of One-pieces
Once you create something, you’ll be the only one that has it! One of One-pieces are fun because you know when you leave the house, no one will ever be matching you. Sometimes I get upcycling inspiration on YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Pinterest. Once I make my pieces, there is always something different about mine.
3. Reduce clothing waste by reworking something you already have
Again on being more sustainable! If you have some items in your closet that you’re thinking about tossing, you can use the fabric to create something else.
4. Fresh wardrobe without breaking the bank
Upcycling will allow you to have brand new items for way less money! It’s obviously going to cost you something but you won’t break the bank gathering fabric or materials.
5. Be Creative!
Not saying creating is everyone’s thing, but I think having a creative outlet is very important! Especially during this pandemic, creating has made each day a little better. Since clothing is a thing we cannot live without. It’s fun to be able to be the creative director of your pieces.
Whether your next upcycle project is turning jeans into a jacket, adding patches to a pair of pants, or painting on a t-shirt, just remember to have fun! I would love to see anything you all upcycle. Tag me on Instagram @parisatavia.
