I asked on my Instagram, what do you guys want to see and one of my followers requested to pick my brain on the topic of mindsets. More specifically how mine has changed since attending the University of Michigan.
(If you have anything you want to see more of on here or at all you can let me know through Insta dm or on my contact page!)
For starters, I was enrolled in a program on campus that required me to attend classes before school began. In this program, we learned a lot about fixed and growth mindsets. Fixed being basically stuck and not willing to change and grow, while a growth mindset is a complete opposite. Having a growth mindset is being open to change and making mistakes because you know it will help you grow as a person.
Coming into college I have also been timid about doing certain things just because I always had a fear of being judged. I still do have this fear to a certain extent, but I’ve recently learned to push past this fear and do whatever it is that I want. Mainly because people are going to judge my actions and decisions regardless. I’ve always been a go-getter but by holding myself back from certain things, obviously, I robbed myself of different opportunities.
High school me had the ideas but never felt the need to execute them. If I could meet high school Paris today, she would be amazed to see her ideas come to life and probably be in shock. My mindset then was more like okay you have an idea, but is it worth trying? If you cannot see the problem with that statement, you have a fixed mindset too, and that’s okay because you can change it.
Fast forward from high school me, and entering college me, I realized how creative I am and became more open to my own ideas. By being more open I mean, I wanted to at least try what I thought would work, and if it didn’t fine, I’ll try something else. Mindset is a whole mental thing, the most important thing to note is that you can change the way you think. It is in no way easy, but it is possible. Going to college did assist me in changing my mindset because it introduced me to new ideas, people, and opportunities (that I decided not to pass up). There are still times when I feel stuck or fall back into my high school mindset. But in the end, I have done so much that I never thought I would and I don’t plan on stopping now.
I will definitely say that I still need a lot of work in improving my mindset. Often times we trick ourselves into thinking everything is amazing and it’s not. It is important to call yourself out when you realize your mindset is becoming fixed or negative and write down how you plan to change it. This upcoming school year, I plan to focus more on myself in order to align my mindset with my goals. It’s easy to think of something or say that you want a thing in life, but besides just changing my mindset, I have to actually back these things up with actions.
Mindsets are a huge thing in the world of a human-being. It affects your own thoughts, decisions, relationships, work ethic, and so much more.
